Facilities and equipment available

At the Oceanus headquarters we have a space of around 120m2 for the association's members to meet, where various office activities are carried out, such as the preparation and study of samples obtained at sea, their observation through different microscopy techniques, carrying out the corresponding photo- or videographic recording, consulting databases and digital bibliography or the abundant paper bibliography available.

For all this, there are 12 positions for simultaneous use of an optical microscope or a binocular magnifying glass (stereomicroscope), with all the necessary accessories for the preparation of microscopic preparations. All of these optical instruments are of high quality and belong to classic brands and models, widely recognized in the field of research, such as ZEISS, OLYMPUS and LEITZ.

In addition, special microscopy equipment is available: petrographic microscope for the study of minerals and rocks, microscope with camera lucida for drawing the image under the microscope, column for macro photography with Canon EOS digital cameras (or the user's own camera that the user wants to use). ), trinocular research microscopes and trinocular stereomicroscopes, all equipped with a digital camera and monitor for simultaneous observation by several people at the same time and image recording.

For the particular study of marine phytoplankton there are two inverted microscopes. One of them Olympus trinocular with digital camera and monitor and with phase contrast microscopy and another Zeiss Invertoscope. Both allow cell counts to be carried out with great precision and image quality.

For work at sea, there is instrumentation to collect data on the main oceanographic variables, salinity, water temperature, light penetration (irradiance) at depth, dissolved oxygen, redox potential, etc. In addition, the usual devices for plankton sampling are also available (plankton nets of various standards, hydrographic bottles). Likewise, for sampling benthos (organisms associated with the seabed) there are various types of pistons and dredges.

At the disposal of user members there is an important library of manuals and monographs for the identification of marine organisms, from algae and phanerogams (plants with flowers and fruits) to marine mammals, including other important groups such as invertebrates (sponges, cnidarians, bryozoans, crustaceans, mollusks, etc.) and access through the Internet to the main information databases in Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography.

In summary, a set of instruments and sampling devices, modest but perfectly adequate, that are available to partners interested in carrying out observations and studies on the discussed aspects of Marine Sciences.
